Jane’s Review

This book is part of the Dreamspinner Desires collection. It is a series of unconnected stories that have a low simmering heat level and maybe one or two sexy scenes but on the whole quite tame in sex terms. Mostly trope-tastic and not overly long in length they make for a great read when you’re in the mood for something specific. Having said that, this is book 1 in Amy Lane’s new Mannies series and as a huge Amy Lane fan I couldn't wait to read it ( or in this case listen to it).

We meet the handsome, charming and wealthy Channing Lowell, whose  sister has recently died in a car crash and has left him custody of her seven year old son Sammy. Channing is struggling with his work, taking care of Sammy and grieving the loss of his sister. His world is in chaos until Tino shows up on his doorstep to deliver a premade meal. Tino is doing his sister a favour, she runs a business delivering ready meals, and as they are both busy with classes Tino helps out. Delivering his last meal of the evening, Tino happens upon the household of a hot older man, struggling with a young child throwing a hissy fit and a problematic housekeeper. After inviting himself to stay for dinner and generally helping out, Channing realises he needs this help 24/7 and offers Tino the job of Manny. Tino has goals for himself and is persuaded by the suave Channing that this will be a win win situation for him and so takes up the offer. Tino starts to fall for the hot, sexy older man but wants to use his education to make something of himself and make his family proud. Tino struggles with the thoughts that it's an either/or situation. His education or his burgeoning relationship and taking care of Sammy. We see a lot of Tino’s family in this book, his mother in particular was full of great advice. The secondary characters add a lot to this story and whilst the angst is low there is still enough drama to keep you entertained. I loved seeing the relationship develop between the young Virgin Manny and his sexy older boss, it was sweet, romantic and full of ‘aawwww’ moments. This is not your usual Amy Lane angst fest, this is sweet, swoon worthy, romantic stuff to make you sigh with happiness.

NARRATION

This isn’t a very long book to listen to at just over 6 hours in length. It is the first audiobook I’ve listened to that's been narrated by John Solo and I did enjoy his voice. There is a great age range of voices in this book and I thought the narrator did a sterling job with each of them. The young Sammy, with his sometimes petulant behaviour was captured so well. We could also distinguish Tino and his friends that were his age range and then there was the slightly older sexy Channing. It's well paced and the dialogue is witty. It's not overly involved, you don't need to be paying it your full attention to make sense of the story. It’s a great trope tastic, feel good story, well worth a listen.

Meet Amy Lane

Amy Lane exists happily with her noisy family in a crumbling suburban crapmansion, and equally happily with the surprisingly demanding voices who live in her head.

She loves cats, movies, yarn, pretty colors, pretty men, shiny things, and Twu Wuv, and despises house cleaning, low fat granola bars, and vainglorious prickweenies.

She can be found at her computer, dodging housework, or simultaneously reading, watching television, and knitting, because she likes to freak people out by proving it can be done.
