Synopsis

“Say my fucking name.”

Alex Gardner is a psychiatric nurse, Ross McKendrik a tattoo artist: both know the fears and strains of caring for an old man with dementia: Ross’s father. When lines between father and son are crossed and trust is broken between Alex and Ross—between a sub and Dom—Ross is in a fight for his life to earn the right to hear his sub say his name again. Only having grown up in the Scottish Highlands, Ross’s methods are a little... dangerous, his methods a little... dark. Love is about to get very, very tough.

Jane’s Review

I love this author’s writing and I love stories that are darker and edgier, even better if they have a Dom/sub dynamic and Jack writes this superbly. If you have read anything by this author before, I would say this is slightly lighter in tone and subject matter. It isn't anywhere near as dark as the Don’t… series, for example, but it still qualifies as a darker novella. It looks at a time in the long term relationship between a Dom, Scottish tattoo artist Ross, and his sub Alex.

Alex is a psychiatric nurse hailing from Birmingham and he was the in home carer of Ross’s father. He is now on the staff in the psychiatric unit where Ross’s dad resides with mixed dementia. Working in a difficult and sometimes dangerous profession, leads to mixed emotions and messages between the sub and his Dom. The very dynamic of their relationship is called into question and here is the nub of this story. At the unit, both men have to hide their private relationship in order to conserve the professionalism between carer and client. This secrecy and the delicate balance between being long term partners who are in a D/s relationship, coupled with their roles as son of the patient, whilst  the other being one of his primary carers, contributes to a breakdown in communication and in their dynamic.

This absolute breakdown leaves both parties unable to move forward. Neither knowing how to say sorry or leave the anger and hurt feelings behind. Ross decides to take things into his own hands and here we see the darkest part of the story. It's how he feels he can reassert himself as Alex’s Dom and also to apologise in his own unique way. The Dom/sub relationship is well described and emotively felt in this novella. The BDSM scenes are both extremely hot and very visceral, the training described in depth and with intricate detail. The shaded chain aspect of the story was very touching, I loved seeing Ross’s artistic ability shown in several different ways and it was lovely that it remained one of his last connections with his father.

The resolution, when it comes, is emotional and heartfelt in its own way, even if it seems a tad brutal in its initial execution. It is more about re-establishing boundaries and roles with better communication between the two. I loved this snapshot look at an established couple in conflict and was very pleased that they could resolve it. A great novella, well written with a darker, grittier tone that still has you rooting for the couple and their love.

Meet Jack L. Pyke

unnamed

Jack blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive, and if that drive just happens to lead to sexual tension between two or more guys in a D/s relationship, Jack’s the first to let nature take its course.
