Character Interview with Kerry

Lynn: Hi Kerry, thanks for agreeing to chat with us! I love your outfit, by the way. The straps and the tailoring in the bodice are really beautiful.

Kerry: Oh, thanks, Lynn. I made it a few weeks ago. I can do one in your size if you’d like?

Lynn: Absolutely! I’d be honored. So, down to business. How would you describe yourself?

Kerry: *laughs* I try not to, generally. Just aim to be myself and do what feels right. I’m genderqueer. I’m the youngest of four brothers who grew up in a strict military household. I’ve been traveling down a kind of bumpy road the past few years, but have learned a lot along the way. My life really revolves around the people I love.

Lynn: Hobbies?

Kerry: Right now, most of my time is spent designing clothes, but I still dance whenever I can.

Lynn: Professionally?

Kerry: Not so much anymore. The club where I used to work is somewhere my friends hang out, so we meet up there once in a while. Kind of funny to dance on the floor instead of up on the stage or in one of the cages. I always have this feeling like any moment management’s gonna grab me, say they’re one dancer short and ask me to get in costume.

Lynn: Would you do it if they asked?

Kerry: *laughs again* Hmm, a certain someone might have something to say about that…

Lynn: Ewyn?

Kerry: He’s protective of me. Comes with the job description. And from experience, too. Of course, I always try to respect his feelings, but I also don’t really love the feeling of being watched by a roomful of people anymore. It used to be such a rush to be in the spotlight, but now it just makes me nervous.

Lynn: Do you dress more conservatively now, when you go dancing with friends?

Kerry: I usually wear more than a thong and platform boots, to start with! But not much more. It gets hot in there.

Lynn: And Ewyn’s okay with that?

Kerry: Sure. His co-workers on Blaze’s security team kind of roll their eyes when they notice if I don’t have much on, because they know it’ll mean he’ll have one eye on the door, and one on me, but he’s good at multitasking. Plus, he always asks my friend Dima to stick by me, just in case. Dima can kick some ass if he needs to. So can I.

Lynn: Does that come from your upbringing?

Kerry: Oh yeah. I’ve been surrounded by Marines for as long as I can remember. Stepdad, brothers, friends. They made sure I know how to take care of myself. Still do. I’m pretty sure they worry about me more than anyone else in the whole world. It gets a little exhausting, but I just keep reassuring them I’m fine. There’s no use in spending life worrying about everything that can happen. All we can do is live in the moment and take it as it comes. I do think it’s kind of my secret weapon though, that I’ve had all of this self-defense training. I used to play a Marine in my act, you know. Just for laughs, when I was with my ex, Jamie, sometimes I’d go out in the costume dress blues just to show him I could pull it off and convince people it was the real thing. He got off on it so hard.

Lynn: Have you ever done that with Ewyn? Went out in the dress blues?

Kerry: Oh my god, could you imagine? I think he’d… Honestly, I don’t know what he’d do. Have a heart attack? Tackle me? Strip me before I got one foot out of the bedroom? It would be easy since they’re tear away clothes… Fear for my sanity? Tie me to a chair and call for a psychologist? I might have to try that, because now I’m curious…

Lynn: Please don’t torture him on my account!

Kerry: I’ve always had fun making light of tough stuff. I’ve had a lot of tough stuff to get through, for as long as I can remember. Some of it has to do with being genderqueer, but not all of it, or even most. Everything I’ve been and all of the parts of my personality—the Marine, the stripper, the screw-up, the designer—it all stays with me, in different amounts. Just like the way the people I’ve lost stay with me too. They always will. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lynn: Thank you so much for the interview, Kerry. And go easy on Ewyn, please!

Kerry: Go easy? Me? Never!

Synopsis

Kerry Sanderson is an exotic dancer, former military brat, and aspiring fashion designer, but believes he’s much more than any of those labels imply. As his relationship with transgender boyfriend Jamie falls apart, it’s Kerry’s gender identity and sexual preferences that become the real issue between them. Left questioning whether he’s been living under everyone else's terms, and none of his own, Kerry sets out to discover who he really is. Desperate to escape his dangerous neighborhood and redefine his life, Kerry vows to start making some changes. One of the first is accepting what seems to be an innocent offer from allegedly straight security guard, Ewyn Garrity, after a long shift dancing at gay club Blaze. Safety isn't the only thing Ewyn tempts Kerry with as sparks fly and lines are crossed. The more acceptance Kerry finds in Ewyn, the more he’s tempted to let go of the fear and self-doubt that had been hampering his ability to be himself. But the more honest Kerry is, slowly accepting the feminine aspects of his identity and becoming vulnerable, the more deadly threats he faces when blind intolerance threatens before he's barely bloomed.
